Jericho Ditch is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Deana Lawson.
Deana Lawson’s work is focused on the personal and historical events experienced through the body.
Her work addresses themes of intimacy, familial legacies, mortification, and the flesh.  Although
the resulting photograph(s) are important, the exchanges between photographer and subject, the
observer and the observed, are just as important.  Her photographs present a community of strangers,
friends, neighbors, and biological family.  Lawson sees the various people and stages of life that
she captures as existing within one expanded family album.

Lawson utilizes a wide range of photographic languages, including staged imagery photographed with
studio lights and a large format set-up, in combination with candid snap shots.  In addition, Lawson
uses appropriated pictures given to her by subjects, or images she discovers in local library
collections, and sometimes purchased.  The different modes of photographic production, whether
staged or found, feed into the ongoing narratives that Lawson complicates.

Deana Lawson is a photo-based artist born in Rochester, NY. She received her M.F.A. in Photography
from RISD in 2004. Exhibitions include KIT Museum in Dusseldorf Germany; PS1 Contemporary Art
Center, New York; Light Work Gallery, Syracuse New York; Studio Museum in Harlem; Cohan & Leslie

09 Aaron Siskind Fellowship Grant and a NYFA Grant in 2006. Her work has been published in Time Out
